Jim from Little Woodworkers gets us thinking about how many uses we have for wood and how it comes from trees. Trees are cut down and then taken to the mill to be made into pieces of wood. The wood is then used to make many different things that we use in our everyday lives – Jim shows us a wooden bowl, spoon and spatula, chopping board, pencils, chop sticks, paper.

We learn about a variety of tools used in wood working – a saw, drill, mallet and hammer.

Animals live in and feed on trees – cockatoo, owl, brush tail possum, koala, green tree snake, bat and a very tiny possum with a very long tail called a “fairy possum”. I read that the Fairy Possum (Leadbeaters Possum) is the emblem of Victoria and is critically endangered because they nest in the hollows of trees. A tree needs to be 150 years old to form a hollow and many of these trees were burnt down in the 2009 bush fires or have been logged. We will further investigate the Fairy Possum and the importance of preserving our trees and using recycled products in our coming Kinder sessions.

What do humans and animals eat from trees?
Lemons, limes, mangoes, apples, avocados, peaches, pears, oranges, limes.  We also learn that maple syrup comes from the inside of the maple tree – a hole and small pipe are put into the maple tree and the maple syrup is drained out.

How do we be safe when wood working?
Wear gloves, protective glasses, ear protectors/ear muffs. Use tools sensibly.

Then the children get the chance to make their very own bird feeder using small drills and mallets!

We would love to hear which birds come to feed on them in the future.
