Museum Outreach Program – Dinosaurs & Fossils

Always a favourite, we spend the morning learning about dinosaurs and fossils with the  Museum Outreach Program. We learn all about the interesting work they do. Did you know a palaeontologist “digs for bones” and they use special tools and wear special coats.

We learn about many different dinosaurs and what happened to them. Dinosaurs lived 65 million years ago! Their bones over time got covered in rain, mud, dirt, turn into hard rocks, and sank to the bottom of the ground. Palaeontologists dig up these “fossils” and that’s how we learn more about them. The children had the opportunity to re build a dinosaur, the chintosaurus – we put together one of his giant legs – his foot, shin and thigh bone and even got to look at his skull.

We discovered that if this dinosaur lived nowadays, he would not fit in our kinder room! The children estimate and guess how long it’s leg may be by measuring with our own body lengths. We also have the opportunity to touch and look closely at a variety of different fossils.

We pretended to be long necked brachiosaurus, a T-Rex with sharp teeth and we stomped like a triceratop with 3 sharp horns.

Such an experience like this develops a greater awareness of the world in which we live, ignites the children’s curiosity, extends the children’s interests with enthusiasm, fosters language development and encourages the children to share their own knowledge with each other.
