This great program teaches the children how to be safe around dogs. We will meet Pam who is the owner of “Jemma” the dog.

Some of the things we will learn:

– How are we different from Jemma? Pam asks the children to look at Jemma and share any differences they could see. Jemma has fur, we have clothes. Jemma has a tail & 4 legs. We have 2 legs and we don’t have a tail.

– Jemma can hear and smell better than we can.

– We can talk using our words, Jemma can’t talk, she barks.

– We learnt when NOT TO touch a dog. If they are sleeping, eating, have puppies, when they are sick and even tied up. We DON’T TOUCH.

– Pam teaches us a simple rule to remember- NO OWNER, NO LEASH, NO TOUCH

– We learn dogs don’t like to be cuddled too tight and they don’t like to be scared. Dogs can’t tell you how they feel but they can use their bodies to SHOW us.

– We practise how a scared dog looks, how an angry dog looks & how a happy dog looks.

– We learn what to do if an angry dog approaches us. We practise, standing still, tucking our hands in, not to make a sound and look at the ground. Then you step slowly backwards and go find a grown up.

– We then learn how to say hello to a dog, who is on a leash and with an owner. “May I pat your dog please?” The children are invited to give Jemma a pat practising these words.

– We learn what a “sniffing hand is”.
